The admins aren't stupid, they know that redditors react extremely negatively to change of any kind, and that getting such a strong reaction even when posting to moderators alone means the rest of reddit will mind even more. I'm pretty sure the way things are going to actually end up is stylesheets for desktop and an entirely different theming system for mobile.
In any case, I yelled at them not to break emotes, that's our one essential feature.
