I don’t use them often but I’m curious because it seems when someone comments an emoji they get -10000 karma

I don't hate them. I even use them in other contexts. Reddit comes out of the culture of usenet and emoji were non-existent in the days of usenet. They still don't display consistently across platforms and end up being more ambiguous than text.

Reddit maintains at least a pretence of being for intelligent discussion. Emoji don't do clarity or nuance well, and they convey little to no information.

Because then subreddits like r/memes will be full of this "πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚" it just looks dumb and doesn't contribute to the conversation!

Most people don't have a problem with an emoji or two, it's usually overuse of them when it doesn't really contribute the the conversation that is downvoted

The way I see it people who use generic emojis an think it's cool... 🀣😨 are just that general public type you know? Sweeped into a specific stereotype of people.

It's especially cringe when they speak in emoji like back in the day when they had that commercial with the girl speaking in OMG ASL!? LOL TTYL instead of just speaking like a normal person.

They spend 0 time on computers, and all their time on instagram (Whatever that is) text a lot through things like "kik" and "snapchat".

I don't think it's cool, but... I am more of a hipster to that kinda stuff. I hate basic bitch emojis, just like how people hate StarBucks an the basic bitch stereotype.

I would much prefer "n_n" "xD" "><" because I guess that is what I was exposed to, since I never owned a mobile device until age 20 (6 years ago) an even then it was primarily for work. While never using social media apps.

Being a gamer also most likely contributed since MMOs tend to have no emojis in chat, so me seeing πŸ™‚ instead of :3 or : ] just... genuinely pisses me off. Weird now that I think on it.

Thanks for the interesting question to answer. I've actually always wanted to think on it but never cared to. I hope my opinion is enlightening.

Because theyre used in all off the popular apps like tiktok, insta, etc, and that's where all of those famously annoying youtubers and movie stars are, emoji are a curse here on reddit because reddit is all about actual funny stuff and not thousands of laugh crying emojis to encourage 11 year olds to donate to them. In subreddits like r/okbuddyretard we overuse these emojis because it's overused so much, hope this helped buddy :)

I don’t know, I just think they add nothing to the conversation and make whatever you’re trying to say hard to read.

They don't really complete their purpose much if you think about it.

It signifies that the one sending the emojis is under 12, I hate them.

I’m fine with one or two emojis. Like, if you’re texting β€˜ i love you β€˜ to someone, it’s nice to see a little heart next to it. Or, if you’re asking if someone wants to go out, you can put the knife and fork next to it to let them know you wanna eat, or the pie emoji to say you wanna eat pie. Something like that.

It’s when people go β€˜ πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚β˜ΊοΈβ˜ΊοΈ ONG I DIED LAUGHING IM TOLLING ON THE FLOOR LMAO πŸ˜†πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜…πŸ˜…β€ That I hate it. It just gets over used and annoying.

Because it's a disingenuous way of saying anything of any substance, there's nothing worse than asking someone for their opinion and they reply with either thumb or a crying face emoji.

From my experience they don’t belong in intellectual conversations but are extremely useful when trying to convey emotions to friends and family. Reddit tends to be more on the intellectual side and adding an emoji tends to be seen as taking credibility away from your post.

I hate them because they don't seem genuine. I see people all the time stare vacantly at their device and write "πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜". I also believe that stuff like that and abbreviations for texting have severely reduced people's ability to use proper grammar and have caused reduced sociability altogether. For example, when you're saying something really deep and you get a reply of "k" or "yeah that's cool" because people don't know how to respond/think for themselves anymore. Do yourself a favor, learn a new word every day no matter how complicated.

I like em. Probably best if they are used sparingly, but I see nothing wrong with throwing one in at the end of a sentence here and there. People who hate them are a bit picky imo

Cause it's just annoying, contributes nothing to the conversation, and shows little effort. I've literally seen comments that are just like "πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚" and that's it.

Because emojis suck donkey dick, it's like cutting into a good movie to show you commercials, type of bad.
