Good morning! In less than one week, it will be Christmas Day! If you celebrate, I hope that things are moving along swimmingly and not too frenzied for you. (And if you're me, that ship has sailed. lol) Speaking of frenzied though, let's see what went on in r/help last week

2FA adds an extra layer of security to your Reddit account. You can learn more about 2fa in this Help Center article[13].

13: https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043470031-What-is-two-factor-authentication-and-how-do-I-set-it-up

So if you're switching phones, plan ahead!

Getting a new phone for the holidays? Don’t forget to disable 2FA on your old device first and re-enable it on your new one. Skipping this step could lock you out of your account.

Best Practices for Keeping Your Account Safe

When setting up 2FA, you’ll receive backup codes. Store them in a secure location (not on your phone). You can access codes anytime in your account settings as long as you're in your account.

If you’re not sure which authenticator app to use, we’d suggest 2FAS[14] or Google Authenticator for standalone apps. Or you can use password managers with built-in 2fa management likeBitwarden[15] or 1Password[16].

14: https://2fas.com/

15: https://bitwarden.com/

16: https://1password.com/

Connecting your Reddit account to Google or Apple SSO provides additional login options which can help you regain access if your 2FA fails.

Over the past 7 days, r/help had 1,900 posts, which is 74 more posts and a 4% increase from the 1,826 posts in the previous 7 days. And there were 5,516 comments which is up 234 comments for a 4% increase from the 5,282 comments the previous seven days. 2,900 new users subscribed to r/help last week (up 900 users from the previous week of 2,000) and there were over 1.5 million views, which is up by around 66k from the 1.4 million last week!

So many of the top posts this past week were about the new UI, so I'm using this section this week to talk about that. In last week's Recap[17], so many of you left very helpful feedback for the teams in charge of this. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts, concerns and criticisms in a way that allowed me to go to various teams for answers and follow up with you. Special shout out to those of you who I needed to ask for additional information more than once. I appreciate you! Here is what we have from last week:

17: https://www.reddit.com/r/help/comments/1hcrvfl/weekly_recap_december_12_2024/

There was a lot of great feedback about this last week. I hunted down a team and learned that Reddit is hiring someone skilled in accessibility to work on a solution that will be accessible for all. If you have any suggestions that you think might help, I'm happy to share them with that team.

Thanks to u/one-eye-deer for pointing this out. A ticket has been filed and this is going to be added back in.

This is currently being worked on.

This information can be viewed by clicking on the 'graph/chart' icon in the top right corner of your queue.

Not intentional! Ticket was filed for this bug and it's being worked on.

Both of these fall into the category of accessibility that I mentioned earlier. It is being addressed.

This is unintentional. Something broke and it should be getting worked on.

This appears to be intentional. I'm not sure if something else will be going there in the future, though.

This will be returning next year.

There has really been a deep dive into this one! It's not intentional, and after a bit of investigation, the cause has been found and the fix is going in today. Thanks to u/rostingu2 for bringing this up.

I recently heard back from the team about this one and it is not something that is scheduled to return at this point on the desktop site. I'm so sorry.

This appears to be an intentional change. But you can use your system's accessibility settings to increase the font size.

This has been fixed as of Wednesday, December 18.

Whew! I know that's a lot. Thank you to everyone who provided this feedback and pointed these things out. This is in no way a complete and exhaustive list (though *I* am a bit exhausted lol). Feel free to continue to leave helpful feedback and constructive criticism. I am committed to passing along your feedback and trying to get things fixed if they are broken. I can't make any promises as to how things are going to turn out, but I can promise that I'm doing the best I can for you over here!

1. **SpookyPebble** - Congratulations! You're like that one guy, you know, the one who always wins and is the hero all the time? That's you! Thank you so much!

2. **tadashi4** - Congratulations, not just on coming in second, but on leveling up to Level 6! Your sparkling new trophy has been added to your profile! Thanks!

3. **Old_One_I** - Rounding out the top three in style, I see! Thank you for all of your help and your insights! Much appreciated!

4. **Mady_N0** - Here you are! Thank you so much!

5. **formerqwest** - Thank you so much for your continued assistance!

6. **Terminator7786** - Welcome back! Very nice to see you again! Thank you!

7. **westcoastcdn19** - A pleasure! A joy! An honor! Thank you!

8. **ChimpyChompies** - Always appreciative of your work in front of and behind the scenes! Thanks!

9. **collectiondue3026** - Well, hello there! Thank you for helping out! It's appreciated!

10. **Rogerpocalypse** - Welcome back! Really appreciate your help in here! Thank you!

Huge thanks to all of our helpers this past week! There has been a lot of stuff going on and y'all have been everywhere throughout it all! HUGE PROPS. THANK YOU ALL.

Thank you to everyone who is on this list and anyone who is not. If you took the time to help another user who needed it, you are awesome! You are appreciated! Thank you for helping!

I want to wish everyone reading this a happy holiday. I don't care what you celebrate or even if you don't celebrate anything at all. I just wish the best for everyone, no matter what that looks like for you. Because you deserve it! =)

Next week's Recap will be out on Friday, the 27th instead of Thursday, the 26th.

On PC, is there any plan to be be able to see which tabs have been read, old design did this perfectly with posts having a blue dot next if the tab had been opened?

Weekly Recap comment 12/19/24

Thank you for the report.

I ACTUALLY am keeping it light this week. I am as surprised as you are.

Last week it was mentioned that pinning posts to your profile on iOS would be next year but Android had it now. Old_One_I mentioned it was not on Android either. Image[1] provided by them.

1: https://imgur.com/a/5M1rgNu

2: https://youtu.be/tSnp6iC_QUc?si=TGjboonS4KfwmZnf

With the above, I honestly have no confidence in any one of them about the browser UI actually being done. There will be new things broken and new priorities for 2025 and these will get filed away to never be seen again. The number of next year answers feels very much like being blown off in the old typical Reddit fashion from before this year.

iOS 16 or higher is also required to be able to use Reddit Answers on the iOS app.

It was assuring to see someone else mention this, does the complete profile team still say I don’t have older posts? I forgot to mention that my top all time comment[3] was from March 20, 2023. So a bit over 5 months old like they claimed.

No Response Given Comments from 12/12/24 Weekly Recap. These were ones I felt were legitimate questions that didn’t get a reply last week

Part 1

1. The text size (of normal comments and the body of posts) is too small and needs to be restored to the same size it was in new.reddit.com. This change needs to happen immediately and needs to be prioritized before any other changes except those relating to Reddit crashing. I have pretty good eyesight, and the text is smaller than any other website I’m on and print magazines as well.

2. I cannot sort posts by flair, that capability has not been implemented in this UI.

Why is there a large blank space taking up the right hand side of the screen? Why is the information I want to read squished into an area one third the width of the screen?

How come it seems like all the bugs of the new UI never seem to get fixed? Is someone reading the r/bugs Reddit? Is there a link to bugs being worked on?

Issue: The screen splits into half if you try to look at the queue and open a post for review at the same time.

Mod Issue: Our pinned posts blend in and don’t stand out like they used to.

Removed comments still look like they are active in a thread. There’s a removal reason off to the side of it. They used to be highlighted in a color which denoted they were removed, which was much easier to read. Right now, they blend in with every other comment within the thread.

I want the communities up top as those are the most important part of reddit.

Collapsing threads is also cumbersome as I can only collapse on the parent comment, so if scrolled down you have to scroll back up.

Here is a bigger picture.

https://imgur.com/a/bsjhqb4

Communites is on the left.Still a big blank spot to the right.

On the desktop UI: Did they just roll it out and decide to fix later?

The biggest issue is the insane amount of wasted space. Why is half the website empty space?

Also, pinned posts just don’t work. They aren’t pinned at the top subreddits. I can see an icon on a pinned post showing its meant to be pinned, but they’re just interspersed in the feed like any regular post.

Issue: The side bars and also posts just blend into the backgroumd.

It seems like home feed deliberately holds back A LOT of content for hours.

• The colour of the background doesn’t seem to be grey anymore and rather a dark green which just looks funny on the eyes. • Post text is also now a colour that is less distinguished from the background which makes it more difficult to read. • Alt+Enter no longer works for submitting a comment • The left-hand sidebar is now always visible which I find to be unneccessary • The UI is far too condensed leaving so much empty space on each side • It seems to be considerably slower than the old UI. • Comment replies don’t always mark as read when you click them • It feels too much like I’m using a mobile version of the reddit website instead of the desktop version • The formatting options being behind an extra click for no apparent reason and being moved to above the comment box just messes with muscle memory and wasn’t a needed change

Also, all our feeds are sorting by ‘best when it should be sorting by ‘hot’.

My settings are set to ‘hot but every subreddit I view the posts sort by ‘best by default and I don’t want that. I don’t want to have to click an extra two clicks to sort by ‘hot’.

Is it normal behaviour that once posted, you are redirected to the sub’s front page instead of the post itself?

The horizontal bar of the new’s editor when iserting images was far more user friendly, on new theres just the vertical line which you can miss, and if you wrongly drag and drop the image in a caption field of another image... the webpage just load the image you dropped, losing all the progress in your post.

Previously, clicking a link in a post you’re editing would make the pop up appear so you can edit it. Now, clicking it will direct you to the link on the same very page where you’re editing/making the post, thus once again making you lose all progress in your writing.

The new interface has the worst performance of any and all websites in my life. So much so that I think it’s mining cryptocurrencies in the background. Every time I enter this interface, my CPU fan starts spinning like crazy, and this is something no other website has.

Why won’t you answer the question of why all of the feedback you were allegedly collecting about this version of the UI went completely ignored like everyone said it would when you tried to collect feedback for a globally available platform via a google form? Here’s (one of) the time’s that I’ve asked this

It just seems really pointless to actually provide any feedback, especially when that means I have to take my time to be cordial and write out paragraphs of information and collect data on what browser I’m using and what OS i’m using, etc., when you’re just evidently going to ignore this feedback wholesale.

I can live with most of the UI changes and the deprecation of new.reddit, but I am annoyed to an irrational level that the new UI won’t let me see a full list of my subscribed subreddits. The Communities list on the sidebar has my starred subreddits and lists the rest alphabetically, but it only goes down to the letter “O.” I mean, I know I’m a member of a lot of communities, but it seems inane that Reddit is making it harder for me to visit certain communities by limiting how many appear in the sidebar.

On another note, say the part about Two Factor Authentication louder for the folks in the back! I work at a public library, in part helping people with the internet, and I’ve had to tell multiple people this week their social media or email accounts were lost because they didn’t properly update their 2FA information.

1. Why change the UI,were people asking for this? Does this change serve some purpose I am unaware off?

2. Why prevent people from using the old UI,were there problems I’m not aware of?

What is happening with the sort feature on the desktop version when clicking a subreddit that a person follows? I have mine set to NEW but yet every subreddit I open it lists by HOT instead. I asked about this last week in this post and thought you were checking into it, I never got a reply or anymore information.

Is there a link to a subreddit that shows what bugs or fixes being worked on so we don't have to keep complaining or posting in r/bugs about them? This issue in particular has been ongoing since this UI was developed.

in response to questions i had i was told by a helper to post these questions here on this post.

1. what happend to all the text editor settings when making or replying to a post?
    a. I mostly notice this on reply posts but i have seen this several times whe making a post on a reddit. actually as i paste this post in to reddit i only have a text size button, there are ono other editor options.
    b. i have noticed that markdown mode does not alwas respect tab spacing when pasting a pre typed response.
    c. what happened to the feature where highlighted text will auto quote when replying to someones post?
    d. why do markdown comments get formatted as code? i liked v2 where i can past the raw txt of aht i want then switch back to the editor to format the document, add links, text format etc.

2. why do some reddits have this awful color haze on them? this makes it near impossible to read the contents of many reddits.

3. Please bring back better contrast between elements and text. (or just re enable the v2 ui, you still have v1.)
    a. why is v1 still around? what tool is missing that v2 did not have?
    b. why is shitui light mode so painfull to look at? i get it white backgrounds are going to be bright but this ui looks like it was designed to hurt the users eyes more so than the average light mode.
    c. why is the contrast so poor on the v3 ui, you have ultra dark blue on a ultra dark grey background with greyish text with varying hues of blue/black for the background and elements. this is difficult to see/navigate on a desktop monitor let alone a tablet screen in a bright room.

4. why are the new redit text and up/downvote buttons so much smaller? this really makes reddit difficult to navigate on a tablet touch screen.

5. what is with this internal server error popup? i never saw this on the v2 ui. if the page loads you can up/downvote, reply, scroll with no issues.

6. i have noticed that the v3 ui is very laggy, best description is like working inside a VM. there is a small but very noticable delay when navigating on v3 that was not present on v2.

7. you want us to use the app and pay for reddit premium, i have tried both. the reddit app is a mess worse so than the last time i tried to use it. it is ok for scrolling but good luck making a post longer than a short sentance let alone formating it well. and if i pay for your service why do i get adds? isnt the point of paying for a service so i can avoid adds that are on the free version?

8. When can we have the option to hide the atrocious side bars or change the UX scale? on a computer the curent ux comes to a 10pt font which is very dificult to read dependng on the haze that randomly appears on some reddits.

9. consistent nsfw hiding or unhiding? multiple times i have seen nsfw content unblured on one post then later on there is a nsfw marked post that is blurred. this happens regardless of how the OP formatted the post or how your nsfw settings are set. unfortunately this error is not consistent so i do not have a way to replicate it consistently. i never had this issue with V2.

10. why are most/all posts i am making now being posted with a time of "in x minutes"? i have confirmed i am not on a vpn and this has occured on several differnt isp's with severa differnt browser/device combinations.

Bounus: is there any official reason v2 went away other than 'developer workload'? you still have v1 kicking around but you are not getting rid of it? what tools are missing from GoodUi and shitui that v1 has?

Haven't really had issues with the app except for the past 24 hours but the bug report I made got noticed by devs and admins so they looked into it and appeared to have fixed it.

Honestly my only complaints this week are the navigation bars and toolbars still collapsing when scrolling and then the old posts appearing in my feed.

Roughly half my feed on my main account consists of posts at least a day old including posts I have seen and interacted with. My alt is even worse because I follow fewer subs on it, over half the feed on my alt consists of old content which I don't want or care about. I come to reddit to interact with users and engage in topics I care about. The life of a post rarely lasts longer than a day, so by the time I find these posts, engagement is already dead and gone making it pointless to even try. If you guys want to add old posts to feeds that's alright, but at least give us, the end users, the option to customize this or even turn it off. I know I'm not the only person who feels this way about old content appearing on feeds.

Edit: spelling errors

I know it's very soon into the recap, here comes the moment all (5) of you were waiting!

Sherlock Holmes and Watson are walking around London when a cat jumps on Watson and pees on him "Oh bloody hell" says an upset Watson, "my shirt is ruined"

"Well, you got to take it up with the owner", says Sherlock calmly.

"I've no clue who the owner is!" shouts Watson, still angry.

"Well, my dear Watson", says Sherlock, "You are pissed on and pissed off at the same time, it's SchrĂśdinger's cat"

Love that I got a Helper flair, it looks very cool!

Still feeling a bit sad that new.reddit is gone…but hey, as long as there’s a chance that 3rd Gen can be improved, I’m happy to give more ideas!

I recommend that you keep tabs on r/ReturnNewReddit just in case any helpful criticisms on the 3rd Gen UI pop up. Perhaps I should start a weekly “Rant Thread” every Wednesday so that more helpful criticisms on the 3rd Gen UI can be seen by the devs.

Also, another user was able to make a better recreation of 2nd Gen using Reddit Enhancer, specifically using the improved settings they posted in the comments of their post (https://www.reddit.com/r/ReturnNewReddit/comments/1hdqpfc/slightly_better_recreation_of_newredditcom_using/[1]). It helped a lot in mostly getting me out of my “lack of new.reddit” depression!

1: https://www.reddit.com/r/ReturnNewReddit/comments/1hdqpfc/slightly_better_recreation_of_newredditcom_using/

Now, I’m NOT saying that 3rd Gen needs to be like 2nd, but it would really be more enjoyable to use if it was. 3rd Gen being designed that way would also give so much more opportunities for subreddit customization.

Anyways, that’s all of the ideas I have for now. Hope you have a happy holidays! I’ll see you up ahead!

Also, I heard that you still like Reese’s during the holidays. Hate to break it to you, but KitKat and Hershey’s are still superior ;)

There was a lot of great feedback about this last week.

I am yet to see one post positive about the new layout. It's awful! What was wrong with the layout before this? First layout looked like it was from 1995 and this layout looks like it belongs in a mobile phone. The 2nd layout was perfect and had no problems with it.

Can we get the old layout back please? Let the community have their say without the bias!

Any update on when 'History' will be coming to this current New New UI on reddit.com[1] & sh.reddit.com[2] for Desktop? Using the Old New UI on new.reddit.com[3] for Desktop (back when it was still around); the 'History' button could be found by clicking: 'View Profile' which was present next to the 'Overview', 'Comments', 'Posts', 'Saved' 'Hidden', 'Upvoted' and 'Downvoted' buttons.
