You want to make an academic distinction between "reaction gifs" and "my response when" gifs.
What exactly are you trying to distinguish????

ReactionGIFs.com[1] has a classic[2] tag that might be useful for this.

Shameless plug - If you're interested in using these gifs on the day to day basis, I created a chrome extension to help do that!

This one can be used for lots of things:
1. When you accidentally see something disturbing
2. When you can't handle a certain situation
3. Frustration with trolls
4. Generally freaking out over something you're looking at

Here's a nice collection.[1] Most of them are clearly identified with who is in the GIF and what it's from, too.

You can use this one to show genuine excitement for something or you can use it to deride the excitement that others have shown.

You'd use this to show intense approval of something

Use this when someone genuinely blows your mind or use it when you want to mock something someone has said that they consider mind blowing or use it to joke along with someone who has said something silly as if it were mind blowing.

Use this one to show extreme disagreement with something.

You may not care about quality if you're truly going for a classic feel, but you might be interested in taking a trip to /r/HighQualityGifs once you have a defined list of what you're looking for.
The good folks there can help hook you up with the best possible version of the gif you want; many of them are probably already made, if not in wide circulation.

If anyone is still watching this thread and in the NYC area, I hope you'll join us on Friday 4/11 @ 7pm for a Reddit meetup[1] at the Museum to see the exhibition. Thanks again everyone!
