The users on /r/gallifrey who know me may know that I have gained a reputation for being critical on the idea of looms. I mean, yes, I have in the past been known to say things like ”Looms can sod off”[1], “any mention of looms and you're banned for life”[2], ”Fuck looms”[3], “every pro-looms will be subject to removal”[4] or – as a general response to a user mentioning looms – "Get out!"[5].

No, looms are a terrible idea. How can the Doctor be half-human on his mother's side if he was loomed, and therefore doesn't have a mother?

Looms? No thank you. We had enough contemporary world stuff in the RTD era. The last thing we need is looms in the show. I want Doctor Who to show me fantastical stuff I can't see in real life, not mundane garbage like sentient human-like beings artificially produced from vast machines on a forsaken and ethically corroded world.

I vehemently disagree. I absolutely hate the fact that Platt took the liberty of placing a story on Gallifrey and not doing the exact same story as every other Gallifrey-story. Where is my transduction barrier, the Eye of Harmony and my high council trying to overthrow its lord president? This is what Gallifrey-stories have to be about, and nothing else, I even have a bingo-sheet for Gallifrey-stories. What am I supposed to do with that, throw it away!? Time Lords, a group of monks who swore their life to sit down and learn everything there is to know about the universe, and Platt has somehow the audacity to write a story where they *don't* secretly have wild orgies with all of their past and future incarnations? Now that's just messed up. Who gave the novels permission to use elements from the tv show in the first place? Publishing a story where Ace leaves the Doctor? no fucking way, that sort of stuff has to happen on tv! Russel T. Davies should have taken the time and done the departure story, in the same way that he should have done a regeneration story for the Eighth Doctor! Really, Virgin should have done novels that are completely unrelated to the Doctor and, to please the fans, have in fine print on the very last page "this story takes place within a bottle universe within a bottle universe within a parallel universe of the Doctor Who universe". At least that wouldn't have ruined the legacy of a fantastic show with wobbly sets and men in rubber suits. If you're going to give someone a gallifrey-story give it to someone capable, like Gary Russell. He founded Big Finish, he knows his stuff, and he's the writer of fantastic stories like Zagreus and Divided Loyalties. Not Marc Platt of all people who wrote awful stories like Spare Parts and Ghost Light.

Whatever you think of them, the fact that they are so frequently referenced is pretty mind-blowing. The book is twenty years old, out of print, ridiculously expensive, and hard to find, but we're joking about looms anyway. That's a pretty impressive feat, Mr. Platt.

Am I allowed to talk about Looms if it's March 31st?

Imagine if today was the day Big Finish chose to announce Christopher Eccleston signing up for some 9th Doctor audios. This fandom would flip its collective shit.

Haha, Thanks for this post. I actually hadn't had anything planned for April Fools for either sub (I've been busy.....sorry guys), but this post gave me a good (Ok, shit but it's SOMETHING!) idea of something fairly simple I can probably quickly implement that's related.....

This delightful two parter (Extermination by John Smith) should be posted here. It’s got looms.
