But there's good cases for some ontologies like panpsychism, idealism, all variety of monism.

I personally have trouble with materialism because it struggles so much with the hard problem of consciousness.

I think agnosticism is a good place to be, apes on a rock maybe aren't able to understand what the universe "really is"

I personally ascribe to an agnostic inclined panpsychist-physicalism.

Panpsychism - that quantities have intrinsic qualitative experiences - does a could job of explaining the substance that constitutes consciousness, and idealism does a good job explaining how that substance has introspective teleological inclinations towards higher expressions of consciousness - but if we are talking about explaining what arrangements are needed for higher-modal expressions of consciousness, then physicalism can explain those interactions.

I agree that skepticism is the best foot forward. A lot of facts seem to emerge when we are doubtful. You can rule out a lot of bad ideas with the power of deduction.
