Actually you can. See I got curious and actually did some independent research (please don't ban me) and it seams that you can rent such equipment for not that much money.

All see balloons. If a middle school student can launch a balloon to the edge of space for a few grand then their isn't an excuse. Of course if they did actually get readings they would run the risk of proving themselves wrong and they aren't willing to do that since they make money based on fear instead of facts.
