View submission: Who comes close to Chomsky today?
This. We should never look to a copy, but search for someone that embodies and espouses the ideas and ideals that made Chomsky who he was. Sadly, he was a person of his time. Now, there is way too much media posturing and self promotion that, at least for me, seems suspect. But as someone pointed out, it’s tough to find an academic today that has such a wide and deep knowledge base to draw off of.

Prof. Timothy Snyder has somewhat taken up the mantle as a public intellectual. Chris Hedges is an acolyte whose books, lectures and activism are top notch.
Chomsky is a one-off genius. Revolutionized linguistics and then went on to be a political activist and revolutionize political discourse, techniques of propaganda, and the critical analysis of government machinations especially as regards foreign policy.
