Hi everyone,

Following up from this post[1] a few weeks ago where we announced an upcoming control for opting-out of being followed, we wanted to let you all know that we are now finalizing the feature and playtesting it to ensure a bug-free experience. We will be launching it in very short order, and will post another update when it is live.

1: https://www.reddit.com/r/changelog/comments/ok8xzb/safety_update_on_reddits_follow_feature/

The feature will allow you to turn off the ability for others to follow you / your profile in your account settings. The default value of this setting will be on (allow follows), but toggling this off will remove the follow button from your profile entirely so that others won’t be able to follow you. You will then be unable to see your list of followers and posts on your profile will no longer show up in the home feeds of anyone previously following you. We will share exact screenshots of where this setting will live in the next update post when the feature becomes live.

In the meantime, as you may have noticed, we turned off the notifications for any follower behavior until we launch this opt-out. Other users can still follow you, and you can see them in your follower list from the apps, but you will not receive a push notification or email alerting you to the follower. You also still have the ability to block someone which will then remove them from following you.

On a related note, u/signal has also been working with the team on building out viewing your list of followers on the desktop site for those of you who do continue using the follow feature. More info to come on the launch date for this in our next post.

We appreciate your continued patience and will provide another update shortly.

Hi! Congrats on almost shipping. Two questions: will the visibility of a user having opted out be visible in the API? And will viewing your followers be visible in the API?

API access would help us third party developers also be able to properly respect user choices with stuff like opting out of following so we could reflect that properly as well.

the opt-out of being followed feature

For the record I think ***it should be OPT-IN***.

I know you're banking on people being lazy and not truing it off but they WILL once they start getting hassled and by that point they are gonna be left upset its even a thing.

I don' t understand , why it was necessary to turn off ALL notifications? Reply notifications doesnt work for now too!

This may have been covered elsewhere that I haven't seen, but: Has there been any progress on allowing users to report profiles and usernames? Right now, you can only report individual posts and comments, which don't work if someone is consistently trolling or has an offensive username. I've seen this request brought up many times before, and it's closely linked to this issue.

So if you don't allow new followers, does that unfollow those who have followed you beforehand? If not, why would it make sense to turn off the ability to view your own follower list when you disallow new follows? The only common sense reason to prevent a user from seeing their own follow list is if that user had no followers.

A suggestion here--

Why not make the follow system permission based? IE as well as 'turn off all following' and 'allow anybody to follow me unless I block them', have a 3rd option 'require my permission to follow me'.

There are a few (small number) of people who I'd choose to let follow me and who I'd follow, and that WOULD enhance my Reddit experience. But without that permission requirement I'd probably just turn following off entirely.

Why even have a follow feature to begin with? Its so pointless.

this should be opt in and I don’t know why this wasn’t the case from day 1

Please, for the love of all that is good in the world, allow people to opt out of these new features as soon as you roll them out!

I found out I could put the app on my phone and see/block all my followers... When I blocked all the visible followers from the list (on mobile), both my phone and my pc said that I still have 4 followers on my account. For some reason, they are invisible.

Okay, but how the hell do I (new-Reddit web user) find out who's following me? I currently have 40+ people following me, but I can't find any way of listing them.

I haven’t been able to be followed since I made my account a week ago. I’ve even made a different account to see if that one could be followed to no avail. Is my problem in any way related to this?

I currently have 2 followers which don't appear in my list at all, so I can't block and remove them. Does anyone happen to know why this is?
