15 years ago, when reddit was developed, presence information was the most valuable feature of messaging applications like Windows Messenger and AIM. And because reddit hasn't had any good ideas since then, they had to reach into the bag of old ones for new features.

It almost feels like they’re trying to fill in the “missing features” to make this a copy of everything else.

That or they surveyed people who had stopped using reddit, determined to capture those people. Some of those people left reddit for facebook or whatsapp and they reported “Just looking to hang out with friends” so reddit said “I know how we can retain these people, who aren’t looking for our product, we’ll change the product to keep them”.

They’re trying to round out reddit to reduce risk, which is like a committee designing a house by the sea.
