Agreed, I starting thinking of Darrow as Bugs Bunny saying "Ain't I a stinker?"

There is loss, though, of main characters in each book. You're not so much worried about Darrow as you are your favorite characters.

The popularity of this series made me deliberate taking it up but the synopsis and reviews are making me unsure - it seems like a less cerebral, more action sci-fi which is something I want to avoid. I am thinking it is closer to Hunger Games than something like Dune. Is my assessment correct ?

Didn't make it to book 2. Usually it doesn't bother me much when stories are derivative but Red Rising was so blatantly hunger games. I didn't like hunger games in the first place so it was not an pleasant read, to say the least. Actually, the first handful of chapters before it went full hunger games were great, but in retrospect, those parallel the introductory chapters of hunger games too, so even that leaves a bitter aftertaste.
