It's weird, every single description of it seems like it was specifically written to put me off of reading the books. It sounds like the exact opposite of everything I want to read. But I can't help but feel I should pick it up and actually try it at some point based on the reviews.

Then again I DNF acts of caine and I picked that up based on the same recommendation, but then loved Cradle which I also picked up from here, so who knows.

I think people bounce off it or fall for it based on what they pay attention to. The humor is usually over-the-top absurdity and silly usually, but not always, and if someone gets it in their head that it's "juvenile" humor, and react negatively to that, then they'll miss the aspects of the humor that aren't. If they're overly paying attention to the rpg game rules leveling up stuff, they're probably missing the character drama and growth arcs. There's a lot about the story, setting, and characters that's a very slow reveal, and so if the lesser-quality first book fails to grab, people don't get to the payoffs.

This is me. I read progression fantasy and DCC just does not sound like my thing. That said, I don't listen to the genre in audio format as a rule and having recently come across another narration by Soundbooth Theatre (Time Marked Warlock), I'm probably going to give it a go purely due to Jeff Hays narrating it (the first book is also free in podcast form, I believe).

I'd say if you do try it, you'd need to get through the second book to really see if you enjoy it. The first one is *rough* and badly needed an editor. The second one is much better, though still far from glorious. I was surprised at how hard it hooked me though. It's very tasty popcorn.

I would massively roll my eyes at posts like this 8 months ago. Then I had the pleasure of meeting Matt at an event and he very kindly gave me a copy of the first book during our conversation. I read the first six books in like ten days (with my eyeballs). Then I listened to all the audio books twice and waited on tenterhooks with the rest of the Donut Holes for book 7's release.
