Wow. Thank you for sharing this. I too hope we can find our bearings again as a nation.

When my great aunt was twelve years old, she was playing in the woods around her Polish village. When she emerged she found that everyone in her village had been killed, burned to the ground by the Nazis, except for the children who were playing in the woods with her - specifically her first crush, a boy named Aizik.

How far did these kids hike to get out of earshot of guns and bombs?

Over years, decades, she became a successful professional woman in New York. One day she was riding the subway, reading a newspaper, when she and a man across the aisle looked up at the same time and locked eyes. The man was Aizik -- my great uncle Aizik.

I'm sorry but no, either you're embellishing the story, or someone who relayed it to you embellished it. It's entirely possible that your family does owe a lot to America but this specific set of events did not happen.

I doubt that you have recently been the victim of a hate crime, I think you're using your ancestry and a made up attack to jump on the "I hate Trump" bandwaggon.

If you really have been the victim of a hate crime then report it to the police. That's what they're there for. Bash them as much as you want but they're there to help you.

Did your family come here legally? In other words, did they break any of the immigration laws in place at the time they arrived in New York or after?
