View submission: Twilight

I don't like this movie all that much.

I however feel obligated to say this. I regret my own behavior when this movie came out when I was in high school and during the Twilight hype. I thought I was so cool and edgy by shitting all over the dumb vampire books that were written with women and girls as the primary audience. It was an easy target. I cringe thinking back to who I was 12-13 years ago. I was a little shit and I wish someone called me out on it.

I guess I am sorry for being a sexist gatekeeping asshole back then.

Let people like and enjoy things.

Something I believe strongly is that it’s a good sign if you look back on the person you were a decade ago and you cringe, it means you’ve grown into a more mature person.

At least I hope so because I was also a dickhead about this movie when it came out

I see this and will raise you “but I can’t be sexist because I love Buffy.”

There’s a generation of shithead twerps, myself included, that did the exact same thing in middle school or high school when these things (or others like it) were popular.

Definitely, shake my head a lot when thinking back on that dumb, immature kid I was.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that these casually sexist mindsets are still as bad as always. Just take a scroll through the reactions to Olivia Rodrigo’s new debut album (which is really fucking good btw).

Hey I was right there with you. Around the time the movie was coming out, my girlfriend at the time gave me her copy to read while I was on vacation. Managed to burn through on my flight there and I didn’t get it. Of course I couldn’t just say “yeah this didn’t appeal to me”. I just had to be a dick about it and pick it apart.

In hindsight, it’s still not a well written book, but I was pretty shitty to tear into it and people who like it. I think I was just being an Edgelord little shit. I may think the movies are rough and the books are not good, but I understand the appeal now.

That being say, the movie work for me on a “b grade romantic fantasy fiction you can laugh at” so I will gladly watch this commentary series when I get the chance. I will legitimately argue that Breaking Dawn 2s fight is actually pretty damn cool. Also the soundtracks slap. Still amazed how many good bands show up.

Yeah, looking back I realise that the reason I disliked stuff like Twilight, Justin Bieber and Ashton Kutcher so fervently when I was a teenager was that I was literally just jealous of the adoration they received from girls I knew. Dumb and wrong and shitty and sexist and I strongly regret it too.
