So I’m in high school trying to decide what college I want to go to. I live in Alabama and wanna go into engineering, so uah, ua, and auburn are high on my list. I really do want to go to auburn due to their great engineering program and campus life, but I always hear about how terrible the diversity is there. I’m Indian and don’t wanna be surrounded by an area where I feel I don’t belong. Please let me know if auburn has good diversity and if you see good amounts of Indians around, it would be greatly appreciated 🙏

The diversity is frankly not good, but I doubt that you will find a large improvement in Alabama. There is an organization that hosts Indian culture events on campus. I think you can find your community.

AU has a lot of students from India. Also there is a large Indian Student Society.

There will be other Indians to hang out with if you want, and plenty of non-Indians who will hang out with you if you’re cool.

Try to find the school that will help you find the best Co Op program. Nothing like experience.

I see lots of different people on campus at Auburn, and J has never heard/seen anything ignorant go down (obviously, I am only 1 person, so this is just from my perspective). I do see lots of Indian people on campus, though. I’m a STEM student so in the science and math buildings where a lot of my classes reside, I see a fair amount of Indian people. Last semester and this semester, my lab TAs were all from India or seem to be of Indian descent—they were pretty nice and were awesome teaching-wise, as well.

Won’t be a problem for you. There are lots of people from India/South Asia. You’ll get a great education.

UAH. Huntsville is the most ethnically diverse city in the state.

The top engineering school will always have a relatively high percentage of Indians. So Auburn, if those are your options.

i’d say every big college is “diverse”, but auburn is MAINLY white people and is the least diverse SEC school statistically

I think the diversity at auburn is pretty terrible… but I also think that it pushes you to then find the groups where you feel most comfortable, and those kinda become your people.

There are a lot of Indian students here at Auburn, and from what I'm aware, there are clubs for some ethnic groups to meet up with each other. UAH is also pretty great and probably has a similar number of Indian students, but from what I've heard from my friends at UAH, (especially in STEM) there are a lot of weird characters. If you are looking primarily at Auburn, you'll almost certainly be fine. There are also advisors you can get in touch with who can help you decide and point you towards clubs.

To be completely honest I always thought UAB was more diverse than Auburn but yeah there’s a large Indian student population on campus.

Mississippi State has a terrific engineering program and has better diversity than Auburn.
