I'm sorry for your loss, friend.
My father committed suicide and the church forbade him from being buried in the Christian cemetery with "other" Christians, because suicide is a mortal sin.
Funny how the argument is so often made that we should not criticize religion / faith because it "comforts" people.

I'm sorry for your loss. There isnt a single damn thing I can say that will make a shred of diffrence but I've lost loved ones as well (as we all will at some point) and I understand how hard it can be.

I'm terribly sorry for your loss. However, as atheists we should always try to be as accurate in our criticisms as possible. I have no idea whether or not it will be a comfort to you, but the Catholic church does not believe that.
It's something that I studied in a Theology class last semester. It's known as "Baptism by Blood" in which someone dies before they can be Baptized. The church knows that this happens and the official position is that those children had no way of being baptized in time and they would not be punished. This also applies to people who never had the chance to hear the "word of God."
