It’s been incredible to witness the ways in which the Reddit community has come together to raise awareness, share information and resources, and support each other during a time of universal need. Across the platform, existing communities like r/science[1], r/askscience[2], and r/worldnews[3] have joined newly established communities like r/Coronavirus[4] and r/COVID19[5] to share authoritative content and welcome important discussion every day.

At Reddit Inc., we’ve also been working[6] to curate expert discussions and surface the most reliable information for you. And today, we’re excited to launch the Solidarity Award, which seeks to raise funds for fighting the COVID-19 pandemic via the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund[7] for the World Health Organization (WHO)[8]. The fund -- which is powered by the United Nations Foundation[9] and the Swiss Philanthropy Foundation[10] -- supports WHO’s[11] work to track and understand the spread of COVID-19, ensure patients get the care they need, frontline workers get essential supplies and information, and accelerate efforts to develop vaccines, tests, and treatments for the pandemic.

We’ve never felt more urgency or responsibility to fulfill our mission of bringing community and belonging to everyone in the world. The Solidarity Award is meant to complement the efforts of our users, moderators, and employees at Reddit by enabling community-wide charitable giving during a time of great need.
The team at Reddit worked quickly to enable the Solidarity Award. As with all new things at this scale, we are keeping an eye out for any bugs and issues that may arise, and will update the experience accordingly.

A) medical staff and sick people need priority for masks. If everyone wants masks there may be hoarding. However this is not a reason to spread misinformation saying masks are *ineffective*. Hoarding can be mitigated through legal enforcement and education/societal responsibility.
B) wearing a mask may cause people to have a false sense of security. However we can be educated to continue washing our hands and recognize that we aren't fully protected[13].
C) they increase face touching from wearers adjusting their masks. However we can be educated to not touch our faces.
What the WHO website doesn't mention here is that:
A) you can be asymptomatic and spreading coronavirus unknowingly.
B) primary mode of transmission may be viruses in water droplets in the air[14].
Wearing a mask, even a poorly made one, would mitigate both of these issues.
These poor recommendations may have ulterior motives (perhaps trying to downplay the severity of the virus further) or it may simply be incompetence.

Fun fact! WHO spends more money on travel and luxury hotels than mental health, HIV, tuberculosis and malaria research combined!
Edit: Thanks for my first awards! (Although they are counterproductive to the point I was trying to make). I’m finishing up my degree in Public Health this semester and I always hate to see the praise WHO receives in the field. The health care worker award means a lot to me as I once aspired to be a Nurse Practitioner. The F award perfectly conveys the money I’ve lost in the stock market being bored and working/attending school from home.

Sometimes i think the community falters, then i see moments like this where the community all gets together to unite and blow the fuck out of reddit for supporting a scummy organisation that hasn't helped reduce spread of the virus at all. and it makes me feel happy, that there are still some sane people left on this site

As of 2018, it has a budget of over $4.2 billion, most of which comes from voluntary contributions from member states
In May 2018, the WHO denied access to its annual assembly by Taiwanese media reportedly due to demands from China.
In a 2020 interview assistant director-general Bruce Aylward first pretended he did not hear a question about Taiwan and then exited the interview when the question was repeated. When the video chat was restarted and he was asked another question about Taiwan he claimed to have already answered the question and formally ended the interview.
I’m good thanks. It’s bad enough that some of my tax money goes to further Xi Xinping’s authoritarianism and imperialism, I don’t feel the need to donate more on top.
Have you considered asking Tencent for donations?

If you're going to donate. Do it locally for your community, not an entity like the WHO. They're not going to care or help if your neighbor is starving

why would we donate to the WHO when they basically sold all of us out to china? they gave shit advice for how countries should deal with because they wouldn't listen to taiwan, or investigate china. fuck that.

Am I the only one who finds it just a tad cynical that Reddit (who were recently given a $150 million cash injection from Tencent) are doing a fundraiser for the WHO, whose stance on China could at best be described as laughable, and at worst downright disgusting for a supposedly apolitical organisation?
The full price of the Award ($3.99) will be donated by Reddit
How very magnimous of you. No comment about matching the amount donated out of your slush fund, just "we won't take a percentage off the top". Are we supposed to be congratulating you for that?

I would be more inclined to support the WHO if they did not parrot the Chinese Communist Parties native and misinformation about the Corona virus. It appears that China was conducting research on batt viruses and knew about the severity of the virus before anyone became infected.
The WHO repeated China's narrative to the parel of the entire world. The WHO should conduct their own studies and be a reliable source of information independent of the claims and assertions of any individual country or political entity.
Most of the American media should be ashamed of the way they blindly reported the misinformation coming out of China.
Just look at how the Corona virus numbers reported by China are completely skued from the numbers reported by the rest of the world. If you believe China's reporting that there are no new cases and everyone that didn't die has recovered.
Why didn't the WHO informe anyone about How China knew immediately to quarintine everyone for 30 days to allow the virus's 15 day incubation period to run its course. And where is the WHO's information on how China's Covid19 test kits had a less than 30% reliability.
No, while the WHO is doing alot to help, they should have done their due diligence and reported their finding and not relied on China's narrative of disinformation.

It's absurd to donate to the organization that has:
A couple months ago, when I looked into it to see if I should be concerned, I (and many others) believed the WHO and CDC who said there was little to worry about and spread was limited. Yes, I saw other sources of information claiming it was widespread, being covered up, very dangerous, and not under control but I wrote those off, trusting the WHO.
When the virus arrived, everyone was caught with their pants down BECAUSE of the WHO. The virus would have showed up eventually, but we could have gotten much further ahead of this **reducing international travel, monitoring spread, funding tests and treatment, supporting research, preparing medical supply manufacturing, reducing large gatherings, educating about symptoms & spread, educating about prevention**. All of that could have bought us an extra couple months, without even instituting any stay-home orders or shutting down businesses.
The WHO has about a 4.5-billion dollar annual budget, and what little they've done to help is massively out-classed by what they've done to make it worse. Meanwhile, we're having to rely on charitable contributions of private individuals and organizations to get reources where they actually need to go, and Reddit would have us direct them to the WHO, rather than the thousands of other organizations that need those resources more and would use them better.
Also, The official subreddit r/Coronavirus[1] reddit keeps promoting "**KEEP YOURSELF SAFE AND INFORMED**" is garbage that gets people riled up; it's nothing but fear, anxiety, sensationalism, politics, and emotional stories. There is almost zero facts, "authoritative content", or informed content there about the virus, symptoms, spread, treatments, prevention, etc.

edit: I appreciate the thoughtfulness, but please stop giving gold and other paid rewards to people like me speaking out against the WHO. It's contradictory to our message.

I can't believe you guys are donating to W.H.O. This makes sense to me as a large portion of Reddit is owned by the Chinese Government. Basically you are asking us to donate to a Chinese Owned Health Organization that doesn't care. They are the reason for this. If you want to donate to help the Covid19 Response, please consider donating to:
Red Cross Blood Donations https://www.redcrossblood.org/donate-blood/dlp/coronavirus--covid-19--and-blood-donation.html[1]

My personal favorite, they did my Cleft Palate surgery for free when I was born;
John Hopkins https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/coronavirus/giving.html
When I was homeless they took care of me. (I did get my stuff stolen every night, but they also fed me)
Salvation Army: https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/covid19/
Donating to these would help way more than donating to Chinese Health Organization. For those who don't know what I'm talking about;
Foreign Policy: https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/04/02/china-coronavirus-who-health-soft-power/
Also while I'm at it, Reddit is owned by China too;
Link Provided by u/MikeyCito22
John Hopkins is a personal one for me that I have a bias about because of me being born with cleft palate and them helping my mom out financially.
I figured since this comment is getting upvoted so much that I should link more proof of corruption in W.H.O and Reddit.

Uh can people not fund an organization that down played the current situation until they had no choice? Can people not fund an organization that has essentially failed its job? Can people fund an investigation into why the WHO lied about human to human transmission and took 3 months to declare a global pandemic?
Fuck the WHO. We need a new WHO.

Yeah I'm going to pass on any funding or more of my money going to WHO. They can straight up go fuck themselves. If you have money in any crisis it's best to give it directly to individuals in need.
I'm giving 500 to my favorite pizza place so they can stay open and buying my elderly neighbor groceries for the next two weeks.

Who the fuck in their right mind would give money to the WHO right now? After all of the shit they have pulled over this virus including refusing to acknowledge the existence of Taiwan, clearly placing them in the pocket of China. Flushing my money down the toilet would be just as beneficial.
You should at least try and make it a little less obvious who really pulls the strings here.
Edit: Yeah whoever gave me the award go fuck yourself. This shit isn't a fucking joke. Thousands of people have died because of misinformation and coverups.

Ah, Chinese-owned Reddit funneling money into Chinese propaganda machine, WHO! Lovely!
Great work guys! Please contribute to this blatant money laundering scheme with your foreign dollars.
How great is the WHO? I mean, on January 14th, they assured us that COVID-19 wasn’t transferable to humans. Thanks!
They also suppressed evidence of the virus origin.
They cautioned populations AGAINST wearing life-saving masks.
They don’t acknowledge Taiwan.
The WHO has blood on their hands. It’s a Chinese propaganda mouth piece and given the tremendous percentage of Reddit’s ownership to the Chinese, this is a pretty pathetic attempt to mask a kickback.
Fuck the WHO
Fuck China
And Fuck Reddit

With the ownership of this company now lying in China’s hands this is basically laundering money right back to pro-communist China organization.

My sister was crying last night in bed, singing a song she had made up about how she missed going to school, and how she missed her friends. Mom had to quit her job as a nurse because she was immuno compromised and her hospital would not provide basic face masks. I lost my job because the whole business shut down a week before mandatory quarantine. My dad is barely holding things together as a web developer. I'm fortunate that I have a home, a car, and no debt, but even so we're struggling with anxiety, depression, and worse. To everyone out there who is suffering, in better or worse conditions than I am, we can do this, if we all band together. I've seen too many people take the motto "every man for themselves." I haven't been able to buy TP in a month because of people like this. Please, be considerate, stay inside, and stay calm. We'll get through this.
Edit: And to Reddit staff, shame. Don't donate to the WHO. They have mony. Donate to the independent labs across the world developing vaccines and test kits because governments aren't doing enough on their own. Donate to people who have lost their family members, their homes, their cars. I understand the sentiment you're trying to make but it's pointed at the wrong people.

Don't forget that WHO withheld this virus' potential for several weeks and ignored Taiwan when they tried to warn the rest of the world. The WHO is an incompetent bunch. They're liars and dishonest. Their entire establishment is built on social politics and not on science. There fear of discriminating was one of the reasons why this virus got to spread as much. They knew the Chinese were struggling with it, they knew it will leak from China, but God forbid they advise stopping Chinese flights for until things settle.
The entire UN is a farce. They have caused more problems than good. Good luck keeping the European Union together after all this. One by one we'll be leaving. Ciao.

Y'all at Reddit are dumbasses, how did you think this would go? Like literally. Do you even read your own website? Why should I give my money to WHO after they failed to do their job? Why would I give money to a organization that spends more on keeping it's employees comfortable rather than actually preventing disease. Actually such a dumb move I'm shocked.

The WHO as of 2018 has an operational budget of 4.2 billion and receives 30% of it's funding from China. They absolutely do not need any more. You'd do far more to spend your money locally purchasing food for someone who is now jobless.
