I'm willing to bet that (at least at some point in the recent past) Reddit's databases used usernames as a primary key, instead of treating it like a "normal" field like an email address.

Yes please, I cobbled my username together back in high school while I was running late for band practice. I'd love to keep my post history and karma and whatnot but have a better username more in line with what I'd come up with today.
