Man. I deal with this every minute of every day. I'm not sure what I feel is accurate, but the feeling of not being what they need me to be.... it's one of the deepest and scary emotions I've ever felt.

how old are they? Mine is 14 and the predominant emotion I get from him is "I would rather be in a dark room alone than here with you". I hated it for a while and then it became my life and I adapted. Now I no longer expect affection from my son. He's no longer my friend, but he's still my son and being a father of someone who isn't your friend is actually freeing. You do what you believe is right without the burden of being bribed by their manipulation

Let them hang out with friends at their houses and they'll realize the other parents are no better
