As someone who never really followed either, can you give me an ELI5 what happened? I know Trees was super popular for a while, still might be.

If I recall correctly, /r/marijuana's mod was monetizing the subreddit, after which most members moved to /r/trees.

can't tell you exactly what happened (check out /r/outoftheloop?), but i can tell you that trees has been the main marijuana subreddit since then.
