View submission: Removing harassing subreddits
Did /r/fatpeoplehate actually harass people outside of the subreddit?

Technically no, but I would say yes.
FPH never directed harassment campaigns, but their users were all over the place. They would go into other subreddits and act like they were in FPH, they would take content of private individuals from other places and post it in FPH and apparently (according to the admins) users from there were harassing people on reddit and outside of reddit.
It seems to me that rather than ban the subreddit they should have banned the users. The argument that the subreddit makes the users do something is interesting, but debatable. Culture does play a part, but in a multicultural, tolerant society that means accepting things you find offencive and distasteful.
It was banned for promoting tacit harassment. However, the sidebar rules clearly told people not to do it. Not in a "wink wink" sort of way. FPH mods banned people relentlessly for not following the rules, which included brigading. Including an understanding with /r/offmychest
They covered their bases pretty well. This will be interesting to see them defend because they have a lot of evidence on their side and the admin team has yet to show theirs.

I love how everyone is saying no, but they actually have. Most recently someone took pics from a /r/keto post and not only posted to FPH, but also got in a huge argument with a lot of members there. That's not the only time I've seen FPH in the wild.
Edit: to be clear, they are taking photos back to FPH and making fun of them there AS WELL AS making fun and harassing on the original post.

I mean anything in the top 250 on all that had someone overweight more or less systematically had a comment calling them a whale, fatty or hamplanet and then the next comment was /r/fatpeoplehate and the comments would go from there. The subreddit itself didn't post or brigade on its own page and seemed to try and actively stop links, but I think many people took too far/didn't understand the circlejerk or contained mindset of the subreddit and just started to actively brew anger/resentment and then would look into other posts and stuff to then bring the content of the subreddit to those posts. The amount of fat based harrassment has seemed to have gone up a huge amount last 2 months or so.

I had a friend who was posted there, someone saw it and forwarded her the link. It really fucked with her. I don't see the point in being cruel to anyone based on the way they look.
Great rule of thumb: don't criticize something about someone's appearance that they can't change in ten seconds.

Yes. I wouldn't say they went out of their way but in any post with a picture of someone trying to lose weight there are always some comments at the bottom. There was one post the guy went from 320 to 230 and someone said: good job at almost being the size of a human instead of congratulating the guy on his huge weight loss. Granted he's still fat but that's a lot of weight to take off. Why be shitty about it?

I think there were a few cases where members of /r/fatpeoplehate harassed people in /r/loseit and similar weight-loss subreddits where overweight people posted pictures.

Yes, actually. Plenty. Take /r/GrandTheftAuto5 as a notable example. Two people who played in game together met up in real life. The /r/fatpeoplehate brigade had the moderators working overtime to remove any disgusting comments from them. As I browse reddit I see fat hate all the time in the comments section.

People are saying no, but the reality of it is that they were targetting imgur staff, posting their pictures, insulting them, etc.
Id imagine imgur and Reddit have a good relationship, since like almost all photos are posted to imgur for reddit.
Reddit admins stepped in, because of the relationship and i bet a favour was called.
Just my 2 cents.
Edit: I mean think about it:
IMGUR: Take it down or we block reddit from displaying anything from us
"90% of all photos on reddit 404"
Reddit: FPH is now banned. We decided this was the best thing to do, even though we have never done it before and said we wouldnt.

I'm curious why no one has mentioned this. But isn't commenting on social media profiles to make fun of someone's weight harassment? Making repeated, demeaning facebook comments that are targeted at a specific group of people definitely counts as harassment right?

Yes. They told someone on suicidewatch to kill themselves because they were fat. They took someone's photo they posted in r sowing and put it on their sidebar

Nope.
Interesting how /r/coontown still exists.
Being fat is a choice and I will hate them all I want. Apparently that's "harrasment", but hating black people is totally ok? Thanks reddit.

Yes, they absolutely did but you aren't going to get an accurate response for this comment because the members of that subreddit are PISSED and they are in this thread in full force. Take a look at which comments are heavily upvoted and gilded, those that agree. That being said, although I think that sub was full of fucking degenerates they make an ok point. Subs like /r/coontown still existing is definitely hypocritical.

Yes. There was an instance of a FPH brigade in the GTAV sub about a month ago[1].

There are a lot of people straight up lying in their responses to you.
Yes. FPH posters *absolutely* harassed people outside their subreddit. It wasn't as widespread as SRS used to be back when people gave a shit, but it was *definitely* there. Any time a major sub had a discussion about weight loss or obesity, FPH was there to remind everyone that "fatties" are inhuman scum who don't deserve to draw breath.
It's good that they got banned. It's bad that they weren't banned sooner.

It's really funny that a this sub had a literal rule against differing opinions (punishable with a banhammer), and now the members of that sub are bitching about free speech. ha

They would take progress pictures from people trying to lose weight and make fun of them.

It was always annoying how it showed up on r/all. blocking it from there would have been more appropriate in my opinion. it was a self-described hate sub.

Absolutely. They've been spilling into other subreddits for a while now. The shit that's going on today is just a more visible version of what has already been happening.

Well yeah they did brigade a few threads that's why they got banned.

Of course they did. Threads in /r/fitness were regularly brigaded. Any time a picture of a fat person appeared on a default subreddit, it would be linked to /r/fatpeoplehate, and the hate would start rolling in.

I did have one problem with the sub. They sometimes published sneaky pictures of fat people. I find that wrong. I wouldn't want someone posting pictures of me on the internet.
That's about the worst thing they did.
On the other hand I think they created good balance to those stupid "movements" like Health at Every Size. Promoting obesity should be banned just like promoting smoking is.

Yes, lol. They have a different meta post about brigading every other time I visited.
