The CCZ has issued a statement regarding the closure and economic struggles of formal retailers in Zimbabwe. OK recently announced it is shutting down six branches in and around Harare. While we acknowledge the impact of these closures, it's important to note that formal traders are not closing sole

Woah! These guys were so close to me? Dang, should have dropped by!

Extra side note: Those of you into video/content production, why don't you go and pitch a revival of the show "Consumer Report". it could just live on social media and crowdsource content from followers and formal complaints they already have on file! It could be fun!

Closure was inevitable for these guys. I remember during elections in Bulawayo the ruling party allowed vendors to take over parking spaces and sell their stuff so that they can “make a living” and the zanu guys would charge like $5 per stand per day. Now elections are over the council tried to clean up but they got to a point where the council was beaten up and some people injured. Informal traders are everywhere and are cheaper than supermarkets because they smuggle stuff in. It was predictable back then but they chose to ignore the signs for short term gain. Now big business is shutting down. Sad

The point that is not made by ccz is that the government should reduce tax so that the formal retailers can compete with the informal retailers. Whoever is not performing well with low tax will go out of business whether they are formal or informal because the moment there is a clamp down on informal retailers, formal retailers will increase prices continuously all the quarterly periods as they have been doing for the past years. With low tax, informal retailers will formalise and prices will remain as they are with the competition from formalised informal retailers.

This is when we start dying en masse because of the counterfeit and recalled goods that are being resold in unregulated markets by unscrupulous manufacturers (& their agents).

The formal sector is at least held to a standard of accountability for the quality of the goods they sell you.
