Hi guys does anyone know how I can request/justify a need for monitor and headphones. My counselor said for the monitor I would need to have a SCD eye condition& have medical stating I need that. I am service connected with tension headaches but at 0% & I also want to ask for some headphones it is stated on my syllabus and I’m also SC with tinnitus. I had ask for a MacBook but he got me a Lenovo which ig it’s fine as long as it works. I am majoring in ACCT

Dude…my advice…play the Karen card and ask for a supervisor. My VRE person doesn’t do anything until I ask to talk to there supervisor.

Va form 28-1905m. Materials request submitted directly to your vre rep. Did mine about 3 weeks ago requesting laptop. They don't let you choose but they sent directly to my house and 24 inch external monitor, headphones, the cable to attach to laptop, lenovo thinkbook g6, an iPad 10, laptop case, and a subscription to anti virus. That's in louisiana.

I advocated for myself and got a MacBook. I fought really hard for a few months to build a case to get one. Basically, if those two items are listed on the syllabus then you have prove that you need those items. Take a look at the laws for VR&E it’s public information. I am a native Mac user, getting a PC would have given me more stress and anguish to learn a new operating system. My counselor sent my case up for higher lever review and it got approved. You can also ask your professor for a letter saying that you need a MAC and headphones that will help. Otherwise, VR&E gives you a stipend for supplies and you can directly buy the headphones from your school online store and mark it as supplies without having to go through the counselor.

Edit: there was a threshold on the cost of the laptop so I found a refurbished Mac book pro 3. VR&E asked me to include the 3-year warranty with the whole total. My syllabus required an operating system that was no older than 5 years. However I have to reiterate, that in order to prove that you need something, it has to be listed on the syllabus.

Based on my conversation with my counselor, it’s goes a lot smoother if they have something specifying the need for a particular device or specifications.

In my case, we use software that pretty much required a dedicated GPU. I ended up with an MSI gaming laptop—I don’t game, but it’s got the juice to run ArcGIS Pro.

Since I could show in the syllabus that we had to be able to use that software, she just said send me the hardware specs it requires. I went to the company website and took a screenshot of their specs as well as one from the syllabus.

If you can show the specific need, they should take care of you. I agree that they won’t always give you a particular brand, etc.

Good luck!
