NVCC’s thriving ceramics program is under threat, and t’s not due to lack of interest or low enrollment. In fact, ceramics is the most in-demand fine arts elective on campus, with every class at capacity and long waitlists of students who can’t get in. Despite this, NVCC President Anne Kress is pushing forward with a plan that will effectively kill the ceramics program at Annandale and it's not because it’s failing, but because she wants to build a gym in it's place.
This is part of a larger pattern. Kress has already dismantled NVCC’s sports programs, and now she’s coming for the arts. Rather than investing in what students actually want, she’s making cuts that prioritize cost-saving measures and revenue-generating event spaces over the quality of education and student experience.
She’s willing to gut a flourishing program, displace faculty, and push students aside if it means freeing up money for her own agenda. And she’s doing it quietly, banking on the fact that no one will push back. Actually no one CAN push back because we didn't know and apparently this decision will be made within a week.
This isn’t just about ceramics with Anne, it’s about who gets to decide what education looks like at NVCC. If we let this happen, what’s next? What other programs will be slashed because they don’t fit into her spreadsheet? Anne already received a vote of no confidence from her faculty and staff at Nova. Is this how she rebuilds trust?
Anne "Trunchbull" Kress works for the students not the other way around. It’s time to remind her of that. Please sign our petition to save the ceramics studio and ceramics community in Annandale.
