I've been wanting to get into Modern, so I wanted to put together a budget deck that I'll enjoy playing at FNM's while learning the format. I mainly play a control style (and have put a ton of hours into playing control in standard over the years), so when I read the 99 page primer by /u/TKOS7, I decided to go with Mono U Tron.
Land (24)
1x Academy Ruins
1x Blast Zone
1x Field of Ruin
~~7x~~ 8x Island
1x Tolaria West
4x Urza's Mine
4x Urza's Power Plant
4x Urza's Tower
Artifact (9)
4x Expedition Map
2x Mindslaver
2x Talisman of Dominance
1x Oblivion Stone
Instant (18)
~~1x Commit / Memory~~
4x Condescend
1x Dismember
4x Remand
~~4x~~ 3x Repeal
~~3x~~ 2x Spatial Contortion
4x Thirst for Knowledge
Creature (6)
1x Sundering Titan
~~1x~~ x2 Treasure Mage
1x Walking Ballista
1x Wurmcoil Engine
Enchantment (2)
2x Shark Typhoon
Planeswalker (1)
1x Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
Sideboard (15)
2x Aether Gust
2x Grafdigger's Cage
2x Mystical Dispute
~~2x Nimble Obstructionist~~
~~1x~~ 2x Relic of Progenitus
~~1x~~ x2 Spatial Contortion
3x Spreading Seas
2x Summary Dismissal
~~1x Soul-Guide Lantern (until I can order another Relic)~~
To make this a budget list, I decided to:
1. Not use [Chalice of the Void], because the price has been climbing like crazy lately and I can't afford it.
2. Cut the Karn board, at least initially.
3. Purchase single copies of each of the big threats, that way I can figure out which ones I want more of and which ones I only want as single copies.
So far in playtesting, the deck has at least held its own against the decks I've played against so far with the exception of UR Aggro, which tore us to shreds super quickly without [Chalice of the Void] and only one copy of [Relic of Progenitus]. I'm still testing out some other matches to get a hang of the format, but I'd appreciate any input on the deck, especially when it comes where I should focus on upgrading it, sideboard tech, good budget cards I should consider, or what matches I should practice or sideboard against.
Thanks!

To shore up the UR matchup, nimble obstructionist may be a decent cut for the SB. More contortions and more relics.

Looks good to me. The Karnboard may be too slow for u tron anyway, considering the fast current meta. Maybe add an oblivion stone for more mass removal?

First of: Welcome to the club!
Now let’s get down to biz.
Nice decklist, I really like it. I am missing a 2nd Wurmcoil/ Batterskull in there but that might be me, having to survive in an agressive Environment. Pathways & River of Tears are a good addition if you want the ability to splash B for Dismember or R for Valakut Awakening and Blood Sun.
If you say „UR Aggro“, do you talk about Prowess or Murktide?
Prowess is handled by repealing in Combat, Murktide by repealing EoT and countering the Namesake.
Thanks for showing up and asking good questions!
