I hate saying it but Reddiquette is dead and has been dead for many years now. Downvoting has been almost entirely a cheap and effortless way to spitefully hurt someone you disagree with or are mildly annoyed by for as long as I have used the site (in fact my first Reddit memory is being downvoted in a non-serious conversation despite having no ill-intent or even saying anything offensive). In fact it's probably always been this way as much as people like to think otherwise.
