View submission: Opinions on people who just wear whatever?

Aside from general societal views of sloppiness and judging people’s character quality by their appearance (which we all do, no matter what we say), I think that there’s a bigger picture.

Dressing well and grooming yourself shows people that you care about them on some level. You took the effort to look good for them, thus you must care about your relationship or at least respect them as a fellow human. Wearing “whatever” might feel like just a personal decision, but it kind of comes off as “I don’t give a shit what you think, about me or anything.”

That might sound dramatic but I think it’s the essence of what your parents might be commenting on. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want to feel comfy and like yourself in simple clothing, but putting in a little extra effort has exponentially positive effects on your environment.

Just my two cents
