"alt-right" was, initially, the term Trump supporters used to differentiate Trump republicans from RINO's (the D's in R clothing, like Mitt Romney or John McCain)
The leftist media then began to smear the name associating it with white supremacists, Neo-Nazis, Klansmen and the like, because they love emotional arguments, public shaming and guilt by association. A few of those assholes also fell for the media's lies and thought we wanted to be their friends just because conservatives were willing to defend Richard Spencer's right to get his permits and spew his idiocy in a public forum.
So Trump republicans ditched the Alt-Right tag and let the assholes have it, then went through the painstaking process of letting them know that "No, we *don't* agree with you. No, we *won't* help you get what you want."
