Abyssal Pearls form around things that the Abyss *can't* change. 'Bow has said or at least implied that much like with how actual pearls are formed this is a process meant to protect the Abyss.

I think there might be several different ways for things to reach that point were the Abyss can't modify things further. 'Bow has described them as "skeletons covered in armor" which makes me think that some individuals become Pearls by being whittled down to their core and then the Abyss starts to put layers over them. I'm under the impression that they're among the hardest things to put down in the Abyss.

The one canon exemple we've seen looked like a normal guy, but the Abyss was unable to torture him into change because nothing it could do would top the mental anguish he was inflicting on himself already. Him and others like him seemed to be used as potent power sources.

And then you have Abyssal Pearl Practitioners who take a dip into the pools of pure Abyss at the bottom of the Realm (or are dipped, because it's easier to survive the process if you're younger...) and if they survive they become very hard to hurt physically (though they also gain more psychological weaknesses).
