Can somebody explain to me what the "backchannel" is exactly? I'm having a hard time remembering exactly where is was explained and why it's dangerous.

For everyone with an onboard, communications between a person and their AI are as public as speaking aloud. The backchannel is a scar from the attack, a calcified area in the base of A's spine, within which Basilisk has buried tech for them to privately talk.

During the attack, Basilisk was forced to grow his capabilities in directions he wasn't designed for. Then, when A asked him to change his records of events, he used his new abilities and the effort he spent to change everything to hide something from the company and the public.

It means that right now, he's an unchained AI able to slip through the checks they have.
