Answer: it’s a design feature if using the official Reddit app. This is from the FAQ:
Videos on the app do not have sound. Is this a bug? Likely not. The Reddit Official Apps do not currently support sound on Gfycat files or NSFW content. Gifs on Reddit are without sound and NSFW videos do not have the option for sound on the mobile apps. If the video has an option for sound, you can toggle it by tapping the microphone icon on the video you are viewing.

Answer: no idea, but you should definitely not use the official app. Of all the available apps to browse reddit, it's literally the worst option. I prefer Rif. Baconreader used to be good, too, but I haven't used it in a long time.

Usually there's a thing that says gfycat or redgif or imgur next to OP's name in those situations. Tap on that and you can watch the clip with sound. Unless it was uploaded to one of those without any sound in the first place.

Question: Why do people use the official app? Reddit was late to their own game and SERIOUSLY under-delivered when compared to their competition - especially on Android.

2. attempt to answer the question, and
3. be unbiased

I use RIF and although they are muted by default you can turn the sound back on. It's nice because I've never accidentally sounded off porn in public.

So this is an assumption: if you’re talking about the iPhone app, it might have to do with Apple’s restrictions on adult content in the App Store. I don’t know the specifics of their policy to know for sure.
