It did originate from 4chan. I find it hilarious it's now used in an innocuous manner. The original phrase was

"Mods are asleep, post CP."

Which would be followed by a torrent of Captain Picard and other things whose initials starter with CP. But was really a dare for someone to post child pornography, which happened occasionally.

Eventually it graduated to sinks or other innocuous but off-topic objects on other boards. Sinks in particular caught on because it made no sense and confused people new to the website. Occasionally you have porn or other contraband (blue boards are supposed to be SFW) embedded in the images. People who expect embedded files in sink threads would be seen to be surprised and express interest in a post that contains a simple picture of a sink at first glance when they find an embedded file, further adding to the confusion.

The "meme" in its exact form is nearly as old as /b/, 4chan's "random" board (and its first board); it sprung up as it became clear that due to the board's activity at all hours that moderation was at a scarcity at certain times of the day.

"Zany" indeed.

As I said earlier, the pictures of sinks were embedded with RARs of cp. Similar to dangerous kitten.
