Since we know the show is contemporary (Trump, etc.) and Jason Isaacs is 61 (born 1963), his hypothetical grandfather would have been born around the 1880s-1920s. There's a bunch of governor's born around that time.

It has to be William Umstead or Terry Sanford since they both went to Duke. There's no way it was any other from that era as they were either UNC or NC State grads.

If this was true, almost certainly a Democrat, given his age. We've only had 3 Republican governors in the last 100+ years.
That said, state politics was a LOT different back then than it is now.
