A top level comment on reddit is a comment that is a reply to the actual post, rather than a reply to another comment. If you use a layout that indents comments, top level comments are the ones with no indentation, like this one.

Like this one here, this is the top level comment.

In places like /r/iama, the top level comment *always* has to be a question directed at whoever is conducting the AMA
