it's not always filling in the blanks, sometimes it's blanking out stuff that should be there too. For example you can always see your nose, but your brain ignores it

True! One trick I like for this is to look straight ahead, put your index finger near your nose (but not touching) so that it casts a shadow on your nose. Then, wiggle your finger to move the shadow. Your brain will be like "look, movement!" even though the nose itself isn't really noticeable. It's a weird sensation.
