View submission: How are the Western made jets (Airbus/Boeing) operated by Russian airlines still flying considering the number of sanctions against the sale of spare service parts?

Iran is still flying F-14s they bought in the 70s even though the US government has gone to crazy lengths to make sure no spare parts are available to anyone for fear Iran will get them.

And that’s a lot easier considering Iran was the only export customer for the tomcat

I think it would a cool plot point for a movie where a old school American pilot gets shot down over Iran and coincidently stumbles across an airfield with one of these old planes still in the hanger then, because this is his plane of his glory days, he is able to get it in the air, despite a recent cruise missial attack on the airfield, he shoots down a 5th gen fighter plane and with a bit of crafty flying and somw help from the newest hotshots of the US Navy he manages to fly it back to a US aircraft carrier becoming a certified flying ACE and national hero.

I'd watch that

We had to run the most iconic plane in American history through the (literal) shredder because of the Iranians :-(

They’re also still flying F-4’s somehow.
