Snowclone

You’ve seen them, you were bemused by them, you just didn’t know what they were called. You already know what a Snowclone[1] *is*, probably just not its name. Coined by American linguists Geoffrey K. Pullum and Glen Whitman[2], the term came from needing a name for “...a multi-use, customizable, instantly recognizable, time-worn, quoted or misquoted phrase or sentence that can be used in an entirely open array of different jokey variants by lazy journalists and writers.” Notable examples of Snowclones include:
