Wondering if anyone has personal insight that could help with this.
I am getting married later this year and plan to take my husband's last name. All of the state/county websites are a little confusing in terms of instructions. They all say that you need a Nevada marriage license. Is this true or can the license be from any state and they are just assuming you will be married in Nevada?
From what I have seen you should also put your maiden name on the certificate but I've also found information that says the opposite?
Help from anyone who has completed this process and can enlighten me a little would be appreciated!

So, you should be able to use a marriage license from any state. I know that for purposes of the name change, a marriage certificate from any state will work.
Now, once you are married, if you want to change your last name, make that known on the marriage certificate.
Also, this is important. Once you have the marriage certificate showing you wish to change your last name, your first step is to make an appointment with the Social Security Office. You have to have your name correct with social security.
Once your last name and SSN match up, then you can change your DL/ID with the DMV, update passport, etc.
Once you have a photo ID then you can update everything else.

I have only helped with the NV one, where it is on the license. It is part of the application and fairly clear.
You start with the SSA and then DMV will do the change for you.
Are you going to be married in a different state? If so, what does that license say in regards to name change?

There’s a new law in Nevada that began in 2024 for name changes. You have to petition the court now. I don’t believe you deal with SS at all, at least in Nevada.

You should be able to use another state. I got married in CA 4 years ago and had no issues using that marriage license to change my name in Nevada.
