Hi I'm just starting out in this and I think I have a handle on it but I just wanted to check. Can I just buy a battle host, an armies book and a rules manual and be all set? Or could I buy the War of the Rohirrim and have everything I need?

Depends a bit on the army you want, and what games/point values your local community is rocking.

Generally, I'd say yes, you can mostly get by with books and Battlehost, at least to start. That's actually what I've done, got Gondor Battlehost and joined the local scene, building it out to an Atop the Wall force for an escalation league.

If the armies in the Rohrirrim box appeal to you, they tend to be pretty good value, but if you're eyeing a different force, Battlehost is usually a great place to start.

I think the minimum set of stuff to field a normal sized army is probably one battle host box and the command pack for that faction (one of the packs containing a captain, banner, and one other unit for a given faction). You should be able to field a 600-700 point army using that. You might need another named hero for the isengard box specifically, I know it comes with more models than the others. I'd also pick up the rulebook, but you can probably skip/delay buying the army list books as there are online army builders for the game that have all you need there. I would still buy the one that has the army/faction you want to build, but I wouldn't say it's essential.

For the current battle hosts, I think the lists that let you take everything from the battlehost + the associated command pack are

It all depends on how you want to approach the game. If where you live, there is an established mesbg community, then it s just a matter of what you want to play. In this case I d advise you to get the Rules Manual and both Army books first. Scroll through the army lists, see what seems appealing to you and start collecting stuff for that army list.

A little tip that I can give you on that is that no matter if you are a casual player or a competitive player, don t follow the route of "what is meta / what is op". Since you start now with the game, you should know that Mesbg is quite a balanced game and as people like to call it "easy to learn, hard to master". Find something that suits YOUR playstyle.

If you where you live there is no esbalished mesbg community and you d like to bring people into the game, the War of the Rohirrim starter box is the go to solution because you get the best value-for-money out of it, with two ready armies to play with and the possibility of inviting a friend over and introduce him into the game. The starter box even comes with 4 beginner friendly scenarios so that you and a friend can enjoy and learn the game, step by step and have fun while at it. 😊

I think war is better if you want to get ppl to play with you as you will have two forces, but only if you like it enough to paint everything. That will help to get ppl interested in playing with you more.

Is there a table war games group in your area? That Is good a place to go to find ppl to play with.

The hobby has two main parts.

1).Painting and building models. 2.) playing games.

It is worth thinking about what part interests you because what to buy is different for each answer.
