When I found that subreddit about 6 months ago I was like, MY PEOPLE! FINALLY! I was so sick of the dog hype. I never owned one, and was quite frankly baffled by how much they are worshiped. I posted a lot there, got a lot of upvotes on my comments, and really enjoyed it. I found it to be hilarious and true.

The tip of the iceberg was the moderators. I posted a screenshot of a facebook conversation I had. It got removed and I checked the rules - screenshots are not against the rules. Later I saw a mod saying on an unrelated post "we usually remove screenshots." Shortly after that, 2 posts of screenshots were left up and got highly upvoted. So, not all the mods there were bad, but it seems there was one that was just arbitrarily removing whatever he/she wanted to without explanation.

From there I unsubbed, and the past couple of weeks have been so much better not starting my day with my morning coffee reading about how much people hate something. I can safely say I'll never return. It's an echo-chamber of hate. There are some people there who simply hate dog culture and bad owners but the majority see it as a crime against humanity to even OWN a dog.

I realized I'm not on the level of extreme those people are. I don't hate dogs and no one is crazy for simply OWNING a dog. I get why someone would want a dog; I rescued a starving dog from a National Forest on my way to hike a trail. She was our hiking buddy the whole time, but she was a mess, she rolled in the mud and then jumped in my car tracking it everywhere. She was a lot of work in the 24 hours we had her. I think dogs are just too much for me.

People thinking dogs are above humans, saying you're a bad person for not liking them ARE crazy, but not ALL dog owners are like this.

It was an echo-chamber of pure negativity. I will never go to ChildFree either for the same reasons. it is one thing to not want kids but to call them crotch goblins (same as calling dog owners dog nutters and dogs shit beasts) is something else.

And the hypocrisy at DogFree, the cat worship and bringing up cats in almost every damn thread. They put cats on a high pedestal just as some people do their dogs and don't see how that is the exact same thing.

-free ANYTHING is just not something I would recommend anyone subscribe to. I get going there to vent every now and then, but to read it every day was a real detriment to me. It put me in a bad mood.

Most dog owners don't do the Reddit 'doggo' voice crap thank god.

"Henlo fren." "That chonker doing me a heckin mlem!"

I love dogs, but I understand if people don't care for them. I'm glad they have a forum to discuss. It's a shame the mods there are arbitrarily shit.

I'm both childfree and dogfree, but I don't subscribe to either subreddit. It's just so toxic and they hate everybody who doesn't agree with them.

Similarly, Cathate seemed to have started much more benign than the name sounds (posts about how they hate the fact that their neighbor insists on having "outdoor cats," or venting about how a girlfriend found it endearing when their cat destroyed stuff), but the one time I checked recent posts I found more than a few comments about how some people thought they should go around having people's cats put down or how they try to hit strays.

CROTCH GOBLINS! That's a new one, hilariously dumb.

I have a dog and he's really great and silly. He's brought my dad a lot of happiness and I'm very happy for that. But, there's a lot to this dog-loving culture I see on the internet that I detest. I can sympathize with someone hating dogs, especially when they become ridiculed and hated for not liking dogs, which they're perfectly free to do for their own reasons.

I'm okay with people liking things, I'm not okay with people being absurd about how they like them, specifically dog owners that just let their dog get fat beyond it's health and just say "he's a chonker" and nobody says it's bad.

The same goes for how people are allowed to not like things, but I'm allowed to dislike circle-jerks that only say "Dog OwnERs ArE BaD BeCAUse BaBY TaLK" and use that to push their agenda that all dog likers are shitty people.

I would be more on board with browsing there if every fucking thing dog owners did (even owning a fucking dog!) didn't make them "mentally ill" by those users. You could do everything right, but probably even having a picture of your dog on your phone would make you "crazy". *rolls eyes* Also, I love when people say "dog nuttery is a mental illness! Why isn't it considered that???". Maybe because it encompasses things like narcissism or other already existing shit.

Also, what about how dogs can't love and they only "love" because of food? I never fed the family dog until a few years ago and he always loved coming up to me for hugs and to play. Of course you can't say that because it goes against the confirmation bias.

A subreddit where the idea of it gets radicalized through it being an echochamber

wow who could've expected that to happen

I saw that subreddit a few weeks ago and thought I had found home too. I don’t hate dogs, in fact I grew up with them and there’s one at my parent’s house when I go to visit that I love very much. But I don’t want one for the same reasons I don’t want kids. They’re loud, they’re messy, too many close encounters with shit. I *do* prefer cats, but only because these issues are usually mitigated in their cases.

What I CANNOT stand are dog owners. You nailed it, putting their dogs on a pedestal, valuing any dog’s life above the life of any human. Just being real idiots about just *dogs*. Dogs, dogs, dogs!

“If we see a dog in public there’s a 110% chance I will run up and pet it.”

“If you don’t like dogs we can’t be friends.”

That level of dog culture is what makes me want to puke. And yet I couldn’t stay subbed there for the same reasons you mentioned. It’s just a hateful echo chamber. I don’t hate dogs, just like I don’t hate kids. They’re just not for me.

They’ve literally called dog owners “nutters”. I can understand the hate for a lot of dogs, but like you said they literally hate all dogs

It’s of my opinion that any reddit community that operate in echo chambers will have bad mods. Perhaps it’s because the echoes mess with your psychology.

Most subreddits dedicated to hating something are going to be pretty toxic, because hate itself tends to be toxic. I try to avoid such places.

I like dogs for the most part, but I get frustrated with the idolization of them on reddit. So for that reason I'm subbed to dogfree because it's nice to have a place to vent about it with other people who feel the same.

I agree though it's not good to spend too much time on a sub so negative. And you're right the people who try to shame you for not liking cats are hypocrites who I think have missed the point of the sub.

Most common theme among all the *anti-anything* subs is the hate. Eventually we notice it where we overlooked it before when we still enjoyed the sub and we can not un see it. Feels good to get rid of a negative influence; kudos.

Also, if you’re feeling like you need something funny and positive, check out r/gatesopencomeonin for the opposite of a hate sub.

I am a dog enthusiast - I work my dogs and take them to trials - and even I don’t like most dog owners. A lot are irresponsible and don’t take owning a dog seriously enough

I occasionally comment on Dogfree, but like you have mentioned I find it an echo chamber that I can really only handle on the odd occasion. Many of the more reasonable people I agree with or at least understand. People with off leash dogs who clearly have no voice control over their dogs are deplorable and should not even have dogs if they aren't going to even try to keep their dog and fellow person safe. People who put zero effort into insuring their dog is not a nuisance are some of the worst kinds in my opinion.

But they hate on the "its all in how you raise them", while seeming to only acknowledge genetics as a factor in behavior. I don't know about you guys but both play a factor, I won't claim to know how much both have an effect but it is definitely not an all or nothing for one side. Or the cat worship, when they can be just as damaging as dogs or cause as much ruckus, or even demanding of affection.

Honestly I will not understand people who put so much energy into hating something.

Not gonna lie, this post gave me curiosity because I hate dog culture in general. I posted some comments but looking back on it, yeah, I couldn't really stand the general hate people have for dogs. I get crazy dog people, or shit like pitbulls who are genuinely shitty breeds, but they're so huffy about an animal not knowing how to go to the toilet and dumb shit like that.

The final straw was a comment about how someone who owned cats complained about households with dogs being smelly. Like bitch, your house most likely reeks of cat piss!

I like dogs but I go in there occasioanlly because ypu guys aren't *wrong* about dog culture. Hell, some of us dog people drive *me* insane and I'm surs I'm not a perfectly couteous dog owner simply because my dog has her issues given that she is a rescue and I had 0 idea how to properly train a dog when i got her and you know how damn hard it is to after the fact fix shit?

But some of the people there take it too damn far like a dog owner went in and asjed how to be a nicer/more respectful owner in regards to people who *don't* like dogs. (S)he kept her dog on a leash in a public DOG FRIENDLY park and *still* got came for because esssntially "dogs should never be in public." Like *seriously*

Or a few of them think even in a dog owners house the dog owner should cater to *their dislike of the animal*. Like the fuck? You're a *guest* in *someone else's* home and you're gonna make demands?

I had a dog when I was younger. I loved it. Some people just don't like dogs, and that's fine, it's a free world.

But to hate someone because they like something is just stupid.
