I run an attenuator with my amp for late night practising, works pretty well. Nice thing about the attenutator is that it opens up your choice of amps, so you can pick the one that you like the sound of rather than the one that is quiet enough.
For what it's worth, I'm use a Mesa Express 5:25+ (25W tube amp) with a Palmer Power Pad[1].
