Just feel like it’s worth noting a few things:
- Gen Z was already unemployed and struggling to find employment even *before* the new presidency. 1/3 of hiring mangers for *entry*-level work won’t hire Gen Z. Ghost jobs postings were found to be as high as 4/10 in the fall of 2024.
- More Gen Z voted for Harris than Trump and it was actually Gen X that voted in Trump (so claiming an recession that looks like it could be coming is our fault is frankly rude and just seems like a reason to hate the youth). Also, Gen Z has the smallest voting bloc and has had the least time to have impacted the economy. So again, blaming the current state of things on Gen Z is rather rude and unjust.
- The jobs market actually followed a trend seen in recessions summer 2024 (Sahm Rule). So yes, even though the economy was not technically in a recession, as far as the jobs environment for us, it felt like one.
- 2024 saw some of the largest downward jobs number reductions in employment reports. It’s normal for jobs reports to get corrected later, but for the correction to be such a large downward correction (818,000 jobs) was unusual - something not seen since the Great Recession. In ‘09 there was a 824,000 downward correction, so again it certainly felt like a recession for us job seekers.
- Many of us are old enough to have been impacted by ‘08. So this is also not our first rodeo with the economy messing up our lives. Me personally, I had to play “Mom” due to both my parents working over 40h and then having commutes on top of the extra hours of work. My teachers kept me from recess for failure to complete my work, my family’s broken appliances didn’t get repaired or replaced. Etc. It wasn’t a very fun time.

Also had to babysit a lot as a kid for my parents. Underwear as a birthday present. Tough times.

1998 here. My family lost it all in 2008–house and business. We had to move with nowhere to go. 6 of us lived in a one bedroom motel room for 4 months. I was raised by that recession. The result is that I have a permanent recession mindset and try to pocket every spare cent I can and keep costs as low as possible. I can’t stomach buying a $5 coffee because of all the holes I could fall in that cost $100 to get out of.
