Cheery subject for a Monday morning right?

Brother and I were arguing recently over what dystopia in gaming could we actually survive in and it morphed more into which fiction dystopia are we truly most likely heading into

Personally, I truly feel **WATCH_DOGS** is the one we're most likely to align with, grounded poverty clashing with corporate takeover of society but not to the extreme of cyberpunk.

He was insisting we'll end up in the surveillance state kind of thing in **Mirror's Edge** but obv not as pretty but I felt it was a half baked idea (great game though). Ofc he pointed to annexing Canada as on track for **Fallout**

Ik we're sick of political posts but I genuinely want to hear others ideas

Combination of 1984, A Brave New World, and Fahrenheit 451.

Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents by Octavia Butler. They belong to our timeline.

Edit: Every dystopian book, such as The Handmaid’s Tale, that is widely read is under of Parable of Talent by Octavia Butler for timeline.

Technofeudalism with heavy fascist characteristics.

1984 and 451 are both going to be reflected in it. You already can't reason with Conservatives because of the order of the Party, and the mixture of entertainment with politics is in line with 451.

In the immediate future, it's going to be techno-feudalism. For a time, it will be sorta like the movie Elysium. Whether still on Earth or in space, the ultra wealthy will increasingly want to separate themselves from everyone else. As AI and robotics improve, the ultra wealthy will cease to need most human labor. So, really, even techno-feudalism will go away, because the lords will no longer require serfs.

The ultra wealthy may eventually try to kill off the rest of us. I can imagine them justifying it amongst themselves, conceptualizing it as euthanasia. In such a scenario, it could become something like the Black Mirror episode with the killer robot dog, or the Terminator movie franchise, but without the nukes. AI won't do this to humanity on its own. Rather, 0.1% of humanity will direct mass cullings of the "excess" human population, and AI will help them do it.

“Parable of the Sower” and “Parable of the Talents.” A vision of the U.S. beset by drastic income inequality, a climate crisis causing mass migration, and roving bands of militiamen performing atrocities on behalf of an authoritarian president who was elected using the slogan—not kidding—“Make America Great Again.” It’s scarily prescient of our current moment.

Depends on the country. The whole world will never become a dystopia, only parts of it.

I could see Watch Dogs but I don't think enoigh people are stupid enough to centralize everything on a singular OS like they did there. I think cyberpunk is a lot more likely. The 2040, because 2077 doesn't sound that close unless we have a nation destroying (physically) event.

The entire developed world plus China is rapidly turning into Psycho-Pass.

Where we live in relative luxury, but are policed by an AI that turns out to be nothing more than the collective consciousness of a bunch of criminal psychopaths uploaded onto a mainframe who gave themselves the right to play God.

Considering that Amazon's late grocery store chain checkout turned out to be nothing but Indian workers remotely operating the checkout lines, I'm willing to bet you replace the fictional psychopaths with a bunch of billionaires who gave themselves the right to play God.

I feel like it will be somewhere between watch dogs and cyberpunk. We are about to have access to crazy tech. But not everyone and their mother will be able to afford the tech, like people in cyberpunk. Even if the higher end cyberware is hard to get, everyone has a personal jack. Then again that's probably a product of the tech being relevant for so long...I digress though.

Bro can we please just push a little further to have cyberpunk dystopia. If I’m gonna be subjected to the unimaginable cruelty of late stage capitalism at least let me have cool body mods

I mean the US is already halfway into 1984. They've always been at war with Canada and allies with Russia. They reject the evidence of their eyes and ears.
