Virtue ethics are more about character. Doing the right thing for the right reason, the right way. The clinics were not being virtuous because they were doing abortions for the wrong reason. The journalists were doing the right thing the wrong way. So they weren't that virtuous either. However, not as unvirtuous as the clinics.
Consequentialism is about the ends justifying the means. As in, the journalists exposed the clinics which ended their criminal enterprise. A consequentalist would disregard the journalists breaking laws and being deceptive because the result was a positive one, for the most part.
The way I understand deontological ethics, is from Kant. It's about duty and universal principles. The journalists have a duty to tell the truth and not treat people as a mete means. The journalists failed to be truthful. So did the clinics.
Disclaimer: I don't have a great deal of expertise in ethics. Just got a grasp on the basics. I hope I don't lead you down the wrong path and apologize if I do. Read Aristotle for virtue ethics and Kant on deontological. Not sure about a good source on Consequentialism.
There's nothing here!
