I don't think I've seen this anywhere else (cue plenty of other examples being submitted!) but this makes me laugh every time I pass it.

It's cheaper than having lots of small gutters with lots of downpipes.

It's all over Edinburgh and is just what they used to do. My house has it

Every section between the windows would need it's own costly downpipe, so one long gutter is very much cheaper.

I’ve got an example too. I have always noticed it and wondered why it’s like this.

My other half always points this out. I'm sure there must be a logical reason for it. Suppose it makes it easy to clean the gutters.

I know a building that’s got this… just up from the Grassmarket on Heriot Bridge. The gutter pipes go across the windows on the top floor.

This building was built in

Hmm. That looks like new sandstone on all the windows above it. Maybe the roof space was converted to flats but they can't legally move the pipes? Fuck knows man it looks mad!

Last time I had checked why. It’s because it was simpler and cheaper to do it this way. On other houses with a converted loft. They couldn’t move the gutter
