Hey, we are moving over to republic of ireland in a couple of months and wondered if it was possible to hire a van in Edinburgh drive it over with our stuff and either leave it back in Belfast (coz that's leaving it back in the UK) or drive it back. I'm not sure if the hire companies insurance would let us drive it to Republic of Ireland. The websites for the bigger car hire companies that say they do vans -enterprise, sixt and hertz we have checked -don't have a pick up in Edinburgh and leave back in Belfast option so I'm guessing it's a no go, hoping there's a smaller company people know of that will let us do this?

I can't say there is, but a pricey alternative if you're left helpless could potentially be a quick flight to Belfast, rent the van and boat back to load up. Obviously it adds an extra flight and boat trip to the costs but it could be a last resort if they allow rented vans on the ferry

I thought this would be a firm no, but out of curiosity I went on the Enterprise website and was able to book a pickup in Edinburgh (Leith), return in Belfast (City Airport) for a few weeks time, Monday to Sunday, £420.
You would need written permission to take the vehicle to the Republic of Ireland

You could certainly do the reverse with a van from Enterprise a few years ago.
