Someone from a different group said "it wasn't necessary" to learn IsiZulu, but I want to empress my neighbors when I move. (Plus I'm leaning Chinese too). I hear there's a crap ton of people from China who live here. Is this also NOT NECESSARY to learn, while living in SA?

Nice job! I do think there's probably a bigger Chinese population in Johannesburg than in Durban, but maybe I'm wrong.
Hope you enjoy living in South Africa!
The people are generally friendly and the food is generally great.
Sadly, I'm sure you already know to always assume your belongings are at risk when you're in public.
The heat is pretty unbearable at the moment so don't pack for cold weather, especially if you intend to stay in Durban all the way through.

Nice thing about learning Zulu here is that you're immersed in it, so you get loads of practice. Immersion is key when learning a language.

Sawubona,
Kuzoba usizo olukhulu kuwena ukuthi ukwazi ukukhuluma IsiZulu, noma singaba sincane kangakanani.
Laba abathi kuwena akubalulekile, bafana ncamashi nabantu abathi akubalulekile ukuthi wazi ukukhuluma ulwimi lwesiNgisi uma uya ezweni lamaNgisi.
Sengathi ungakuthokozela ukuhlala kwelikaMthaniya.

Its actually embarrassing the arrogance of people saying it isn't necessary to learn the language of the biggest group in South Africa, let alone not deeming it necessary to learn isiZulu while living in kwaZULU natal. Good on you for actually trying. There are people (mostly white people) that have lived in KZN their whole life and can't put together a basic sentence in isiZulu because of arrogance/can't be arsed. Sad

I really wanted to keep learning isiXhosa after high school but Duolingo ditched their efforts to add it halfway through.

You’ll get by fine with English but it’s always very helpful to know Zulu!

There’s a small, older Cantonese speaking community and a more recent, larger Mandarin speaking community. Both fit into the 2.1% of the population speaking smaller unofficial languages. Conversely 46% of the country speaks Zulu as a home language or an additional language. Zulu also filters into the culture more in a way that Chinese languages just don’t. Zulu will be a great help to you, Mandarin or Cantonese, not so much.

"Necessity" isn't a binary yes/no. It depends on context. In essence you'll need to tell us if you view it as necessary and to what degree it is necessary for you.
100% guarantee you will find use for isiZulu.

That’s great, but now you need to learn the violence that comes with the language and possibly how to drive a minibus taxi.

Would also be nice if you learned to spell. It's impress and not empress. It's learning and not leaning.
