Reddit would have us believe Dublin used to be way nicer. Watch some videos of the docklands too..

Typical post on subs: *I was in the city yesterday and I saw someone that was homeless, they looked really sad and didn't even smile at me, I was so scared, the whole county is an absolute kip, if only I lived in Fatima Mansions in the 80s.*

Plenty of people on the various Irish subs would have us go back to this.

I used to deliver bread to those shops in the video with my da back then. We had to get there before 8 or it was a nightmare. The kids would be trying all kinds of stuff to try and rob the cakes. Total anarchy. You had to give as good as you got or they’d walk all over you.
I think one difference between then and now is that you could give a kid trying to rob you a smack and their parents would usually back you up and tell the kid off themselves. They’d lynch you nowadays.
I do remember that there was good community spirit there, despite the problems.

One thing Dublin had back then and they don’t now is vigilante justice.. Fatima Mansions and the rest of the drug invested areas were cleaned up by the Provos back then with the help of the local communities.. There’s a fair amount of scum in this City now that could do with a bullet in the knee to teach them a lesson

The 80s were super grim. But without doubt, the late 90s / early 2000s were a far better time to live in Dublin than today.

Fatima was grim back then. Not sure it’s get any better since.
