Question: I purchased a car from my father last year. Transferred the title. Got insurance. Everything taken care of regarding Secretary of State.
I noticed that the registration for the car is still based on his birthday. Not mine. I had received a renewal notice months earlier from my birthday (for his birthday).
Is this common? All the paperwork was filled out properly in person during the transfer. I assumed the car registration should always be based around my birthday.
Is it different when purchasing a car from a previous owner? Is this something unique to Michigan? All info I've read says birthday is to be the registration renewal date.

I'm assuming you transferred the plate instead of getting a new one. In that case the car will continue to have the same registration until you get both a new vehicle and new plate.
My tabs are for my grandma's birthday, I bought her car when I turned 16. I have had 3 new vehicles since then and a new plate when mine aged out. I've had this situation for over 15 years now

I have the same situation and would love to know why this is! Everything transferred from my dad to me, new license purchased, and still registration is based on my dad’s bday going on 5 years now, never any indication it’s an issue or an error. It’s weird but I’ve come to kind of like it because it makes me think of my dad when I renew each year.

My license plate used to be on a car that was in my Dad’s name when I was in college. I have since leased 2 cars in my own name and my plate still gets renewed during his birthday month, not mine.
