View submission: Surplus value/surplus enjoyment in Zizek

"The term “surplus enjoyment” that Lacan coined in reference to Marx’s notion of “surplus value” is meant to elevate this detachment of enjoyment from any usefulness to the level of this concept (Lacan, 2006). Just as surplus value points to an essential feature of capitalism, namely, the organization of production around the imperative of perpetual growth and accumulation of value, in other words, around “production for the sake of production” (Marx, 1976 [1859], page 595), surplus enjoyment stands for enjoyment for the sake of enjoyment. “Jouissance is waste”, as Alenka Zupancic (2006) puts it."

All this from Pohl & Swyngedouw (2023)
